The Meaning That You Choose

“… life has no meaning a priori. Before you come alive, life is nothing; it’s up to you to give it a meaning, and value is nothing else but the meaning that you choose. In that way, you see, there is a possibility of creating a human community.” -Jean-Paul Sartre

I’ve been reading Sartre’s Essays in Existentialism, and this quote from “The Humanism of Existentialism” stood out to me. I’m sure I’ll have more complete thoughts to share as I work my way through his essays — this is just a teaser. 🙂
